Art Therapy (in-person)
Service Description
A lot of people hear the term “art therapy” and think its specifically just for kids or artists. While it’s true that artists and kids do benefit from art therapy, the truth is that so can anyone else! In our culture, we tend to believe that unless we have some innate talent, we should stop creating. We tell ourselves that we're “uncreative” and then focus more on words and logic, the lynchpins of traditional psychotherapy. Art Therapy IS a form of psychotherapy, but it instead of just words and logic, it uses art media as its primary mode of communication. Just like traditional psychotherapy, art therapy provides clients methods to develop self-awareness, coping skills, stress or trauma processing, and enhancement of one’s cognitive abilities. The art-creation process indirectly builds mental space unconsciously by focusing on a creative task, and the product of the product of the creative task (the art) communicates the art-creator’s perspective. In addition, you get to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.
